Energy efficiency: a formula for success ~ Pillar Data Systems launches EQ designed to help businesses buy greener storage systems ~
Pillar Data Systems has launched an Efficiency Quotient (EQTM) for storage a formula enabling businesses to select a storage system based on its environmental impact.
The EQ is a simple equation whereby capacity and performance are multiplied and then divided by power and space requirement:
Capacity (GB) x performance (IOPs)
________________________________________ power (watts) x space m2
The higher the EQ, the more energy efficient the storage system is. The EQ is indicative of the performance a storage system can produce based on its capacity, and dependent on its energy and space consumption. The highest performing storage systems hit an EQ of 720 while some of the industrys largest companies systems only achieve an EQ of 210. The Pillar Axiom achieves an EQ twice that of its leading competitors.
Gartner predicts that by the end of 2008, nearly 50 per cent of data centres worldwide will not have sufficient power and cooling to support high-density equipment. The analyst also estimates that by 2011, more than a third of data centre budgets will be allocated to environmental costs. With costs like these, Pillar expects power and space requirements to head up the IT agenda in five years.
"With the consolidation of SAN and NAS, as well as the ability to combine different storage drive technologies such as SATA and Fibre Channel on one storage platform, the EQ of the Pillar Axiom is twice as high as its competitors," said Chris Jones, VP of sales EMEA. "Many storage systems on the marketplace are only able to utilise around 30-40 per cent of the disk, but with the Axiom, disk utilisation is 80-90 per cent, with no performance degradation."
"The costs of running a data centre are rising at an alarming rate, so its vital that IT offers ways of reducing these costs," said Jones. "Businesses cannot rely on staff alone to reduce energy costs and many overlook the cost in terms of physical space of the storage system. With so many vendors claiming their system is greener than the next, choosing the most appropriate system for your business model can be very difficult. We believe the EQ will help companies with their storage decisions, especially those that would like to take a green approach to business, Jones concluded."
