University College Falmouth pledges to be a Pillar of education
~ SAN from storage specialist supports innovative IT infrastructure~

University College Falmouth (UCF), one of the UK's leading university colleges of art, design and media, has enhanced storage capabilities in its innovative IT infrastructure by selecting the Pillar Axiom™ storage system.

The SAN storage system will consolidate operational, academic and personal data held within UCF's new IT infrastructure, which underpins operations at its Hub Tremough campus, which the University College has been developing since it acquired the site in 1999.

UCF has played a leading role in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) project, which provides opportunities for Cornish students to remain in the county post-graduation. To date, the project has attracted £ 120million of Objective One European funding. Part of this funding has enabled the university to provide students with a high-tech and flexible learning environment, including podcasting lectures and VoIP in all student residences.

The purchase of a storage system from Pillar Data Systems will enable the university to cope with the growing student numbers from both within and outside the county, as well as meet the requirements of data protection legislation. The system will give the university the capability to expand storage provision securely out to students and staff so that personal documents can also be housed on the system.

University staff were impressed with the simplicity of the Pillar Axiom. It can be easily broken down into core components for staff to understand how the system works as a whole, with minimal training. The system will store the University College's Exchange Email, Oracle databases and 4 MIS applications on a single platform. Pillar's AxiomONE storage management software enables the University College to deliver different levels of performance to individual applications from a single cost-effective drive technology.

'Pillar's fresh approach to delivering a simple, easy-to-manage solution convinced us that its Pillar Axiom was the storage system we needed,' said Nathan Prisk, Head of IT at UCF. By choosing a new player in the storage market, we felt sure that our views would have an impact and our feedback would actually be taken into consideration. The customer support package from first contact, to pre-sales, to post-sales was carried out with extreme professionalism.'

'The Combined Universities in Cornwall project is transforming the world of higher education and is putting Cornwall firmly on the map for students,' said Chris Jones, VP of sales EMEA at Pillar Data Systems. 'Ensuring a secure and flexible storage solution is in place at UCF will underpin the expansive and ambitious IT infrastructure, which allows students to experience a revolutionary approach to learning.'
