NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre becomes Pillar Data Systems’ 100th customer
~ Pillar Axiom™ is the industry's fastest-growing storage platform ~

Pillar Data Systems, a leading provider of enterprise network storage systems, has announced that NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre is its company’s 100th customer. The centre, located outside of Washington, DC, is home to the US's largest organisation of combined scientists and engineers dedicated to learning and sharing their knowledge of the Earth, solar system, and universe.

The centre holds data from active and recent space missions as well as archives, and makes it available to scientists worldwide over the Internet.

The Pillar Axiom™ Storage System works within a heterogeneous network environment at the centre with multiple client and server systems. The centre uses the Pillar Axiom as a NAS device, consolidating information onto one system from successful European Space Agency missions in recent years. With summer launches pending, there was a strong need to add additional storage capacity cost-effectively on one easy-to-manage storage system.

“Reaching the 100 customer mark is a major milestone in the primary storage business,” said Tony Asaro, senior analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group. “It validates the solution and the vendor. On top of that, Pillar has reached this many customers in less than a year. In our experience, with this class of product, this is rarely achieved in such a short amount of time. This speaks volumes about Pillar's product and its excellent business execution.”

Dr. Joe Gurman, facility scientist at the Solar Data Analysis Centre at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre said, “We need the capacity for these new missions, which we anticipate will produce 5-10TB, of its data per mission, each year. It’s important for us to add storage as we need to without increasing management complexity. The more data we can store and make available to scientists and researchers, the better.”

“We chose the Pillar Axiom to host our Microsoft Exchange Managed Service offering because it’s resilient, highly scalable and cost effective,” said Nick Gerard, CEO at BSG, the UK IT managed services company and Pillar’s 103rd customer. “The tiered storage capability enables us to provide efficient data management services for our clients without the usual overhead in systems administration and capital expenditure. With over 100 customers, Pillar’s track record made the decision simple, I’m optimistic that this is not just a technology purchase but the start of a long-term partnership.”

“This is a month of milestones for Pillar,” said Mike Workman, CEO of Pillar Data Systems. “We’re celebrating our first anniversary of shipping product, and in that time we’ve eclipsed the 100 customer mark. We’re thrilled to include NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre to our growing customer base. This is continued recognition that our customers are looking for ways to simplify, consolidate and save on their storage investments.”

Pillar Data Systems serves industries that, by the nature of their business, face critical storage and access requirements to meet industry and regulatory demands. These include leading companies in telecommunications, financial services, energy, healthcare, software development and technology development.
